Joanna Chun

Senior Advisor, Lean Management and Operational Excellence

Tamuning, Guam

Joanna first partnered with Value Capture in 2017 as part of Sutter Medical Foundation’s Primary Care Redesign in Sacramento. Since 2020, she has worked alongside CEO Shana Padgett to bring the Value Capture Way to Guam, building leadership and improvement capability rooted in island values and community impact.

Based in the village of Tamuning, where she was raised since age 2, Joanna serves as a collaborator, coach, and learning lab leader for Guam-based transformation efforts. She partners closely with executives and teams to strengthen problem-solving at the root, develop leadership agency, and align strategy with daily work.

Her personal mission is to center island values (like respect, reciprocity, restoring harmony to “make things good for everyone," and profound respect for elders and family) and combine them with universal principles and systems of excellence, and to engage and develop leaders and individual contributors to see problems, activate personal responsibility, and build systems to solve-to-root: the Guam Way.

Joanna encourages those beginning transformation work to learn from purpose-fueled, people-centered organizations, and seek to understand shared problems before adopting solutions built for a different system. She also encourages them to go first; be vulnerable and courageous; try, fail, and learn in public; and build a coalition of leaders committed to transformation that first starts with the self.

Outside of work, Joanna loves her easy-going island life with her husband Abe and her four children, and big Guam family. "They keep me grounded and ready to fly," she said. Joanna recharges by grabbing her journal, a beach mat, and a portable speaker and heading to the ocean to give thanks and write. She practices yoga with her best friend several times a week and participates in events with the Guam Women's Chamber of Commerce, where she connects with and is inspired by women advancing business across the island.

“Our leaders are the gateway to transformation. And they carry a lot. They are human with fears and needs, too. Our ability to meet leaders where they are and support their highest vision and objectives with a systematic way to move towards their goals is the power of this work. It’s a personal journey that can change the lives of many."
